The Big C

The first equation I learned in Introduction to Chemical Engineering was "In - Out = Accumulation + Generation - C", where C is (is is just the verbal representation of the equal sign "=") a constant. What I've come to learn over time is that equation applies to many facets of life:
  • Garbage in, garbage out (this includes food)
  • You are what you eat
  • You're either making it or your spending it (money)
  • The love you give is the love you get
  • What comes around, goes around (also known as Karma)
  • What goes up must come down
To me, this makes perfect sense. It's a circle! Beautiful, continuous, never ending. You can trace a circle over and over, no matter what the diameter (or radius), it's still the same shape! This is how I understand God being represented as a circle.

Then there's the whole "Circle of Life" thing. A child is born, grows up, procreates, becomes the parent, grows old, dies, and the circle of life thing perpetuates itself. Maybe that's the perpetual motion machine Da Vinci was trying to create but couldn't.

So let's go back to that C. That equation is all about flow (also known as flux). It's used to explain the flow of fluids, water, mass, etc., that chemical engineers work with every day to solve problems. I learned that it can (as I said) be applied to life (the flow of money, food, love, everything). But that C, the constant, is actually the most important (and easily forgotten) part of the equation.

The only constant in life, is change...and that's what the equation is all about in the first place. That equation is a way of understanding the change of things, and as long as things are changing (e.g. growing, because change is growth), there's life.

I think that God is "The Big C". He's ever present, He's constant, but all the evidence of Him is in change...the change of seasons, the change of weather, the change of people. God is that equation, and as long as we can remember that the only constant in life is change, we'll know that it's what you learn (the change in your brain) as you go around the mountain, and the choices that you make once you understand what you've learned, that will determine whether you stay in a constant pattern or change things to get to a higher plain.
